Les Mis au Fox?” A hit not to miss!!!

As a French critic, I can certainly talk about Les misèrables as it is well known that feeling miserable and fomenting revolutions are part of the French DNA. I tried really hard to find something “wrong” with Tuesday night’s opening… I AM French, after all!

But I simply couldn’t! The costumes and the sets were incredibly elaborate, leaving nothing to imagine wrongly. The combination of physical sets and digital projections allowed for special effects such as when Jean Valjean carries the wounded and dying Marius through the Paris sewers or when Javert jumps from the bridge and falls in slow motion into the Seine… simply stunning!

The actors filled the stage with their physical and vocal presence. The children were true professionals. The Thenardiers, somber characters in Victor Hugo’s novel Les misèrables, took on dark comedic qualities that delighted the audience, some relief in the melancholic story. The main characters, Jean Valjean (Nick Cartell), Javert (Josh Davis), Éponine (Paige Smallwood), and Cosette (Jillian Butler) wowed us.

I have seen Les Mis twice before: once at the Muny and in Sao Paulo, Brazil (in Portuguese), but the national tour of the world’s most popular musical at The Fox is not to be missed. “Vive Les Mis!”

Remember, it’s only at the Fabulous Fox until Sunday, Dec 16 so you don’t have much time and even on a weeknight (Tuesday) the seats were almost all occupied.
